New equipment installed to help monitor changes in tidal wetlands

Associate Professor Alice Jones (Adelaide University) and her team have been out in the field monitoring changes in tidal wetlands and installing new equipment (SETs) to expand their scope.

SETs or surface elevation tables can be used to track the health of tidal ecosystems and coastlines in the face of climate change and rising sea levels.

The SETs being installed and monitored within the CLLMM region are also part of a network of around 300 SETs across Australia. The national network is operated by the OzSET research community and supported by Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN).

Alice’s work forms part of the CLLMM Research Centre’s Blue and Teal carbon project, which is investigating how saltmarsh, seagrass and supratidal forests (blue carbon ecosystems) and freshwater wetlands (teal carbon ecosystems) can be part of the climate change solution by capturing and storing carbon.

Their research is investigating what role coastal (blue carbon) and freshwater (teal carbon) ecosystems play in capturing and storing carbon.

This storymap – A Living Breathing Country –  shares the findings of their research so far and highlights the importance of these vital ecosystems within the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region.
