Kids ‘build a fish’ for National Water Week

We were delighted to host more than 50 school kids at the Centre to celebrate National Water Week (19-25 October). This year’s theme was ‘Water connects everthing’ and children learnt about different types of fish and their relationship to water in the region.

Aquatic ecologist Dr Connor Gervais (SARDI) led the group in a ‘build a fish’ activity, where the kids learned about different types of mouths, body shapes and tail shapes that fish can have. And what these characteristics can tell us about where they live, what they eat, and how they may swim.

The kids built a fish, named them and presented them to the group: sharing what they ate, where they lived, and any other fun facts about their fish!

The children also learnt about waterbirds and the latest findings from Centre’s waterbird tracking research as well as the importance of water in the Coorong and Murray-Darling Basin more broadly.
