Around the world, barrages and other tidal barriers disconnect rivers from their estuaries and the sea, often with ecological, cultural and economic consequences. Ongoing water resource development and climate change are exacerbating these impacts. As freshwater flows decline and sea-levels rise, estuaries are shrinking and becoming less capable of sustaining healthy, productive ecosystems.
The good news is that many countries are exploring new approaches to operating tidal barriers that better balance environmental, social and economic needs. By improving connections between rivers, estuaries and the sea, we can help restore the natural processes that keep these ecosystems healthy.
In this series of presentations, we will examine global and local initiatives to restore dynamic freshwater-estuarine interfaces in regulated river systems. Specifically, we will showcase our ongoing research in the CLLMM and discuss how this can guide barrage operation and water management for a more connected, healthier and resilient estuarine ecosystem.
