Lokeri Project

Our Research Program Manager, Nick Whiterod and First Nations Engagement Officer, Kyla

McHughes teamed up with Scotte Wedderburn (UoA), Brenton Zampatti (CSIRO), Julie Jones and Milly Breward from the River Lakes and Coorong Action Group (cameos from Gloria Jones and Milly’s mum) and others in an initial nak (search) for Lokeri/Lokerar mussel. Their journey began with a visit to Milang, where the team successfully located a dozen lokerar. Following this initial success, they proceeded to Raukkan, where sightings were less plentiful but still found some which is amazing!

During the expedition, the team was treated to breath taking sights, including hundreds of ngorar (pelicans), puratjar (cormorants), and nakarar (ducks) feeding in preparation for the storm.  On the journey home, this was followed by lightning, and it added to an already magical day. Elders always remind us that if you want to know what the weather is doing, watch the birds!!
