International Women’s Day on 8 March has been marked as Global Day of Observance by the United Nations since 1977.
It is a pivotal moment to focus the world’s attention on gender equality and the empowerment of women – to reflect on progress, call for change and to celebrate the courage and determination of those who have changed the face of gender equality.
Women represent only 15% of all people working in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) jobs, which highlights the ongoing need to improve equity in STEM education and careers.
We want to acknowledge and celebrate the women of the Goyder Institute for Water Research and CLLMM Research Centre (L-R below) who are leading the way:
- Jane French, Manager CLLMM Research Centre
- Sue Ellison, Engagement Coordinator CLLMM Research Centre
- Dr Tiffany Nay, Education Program & Science Communication Coordinator, CLLMM Research Centre
- Fiona Adamson, Research Program Manager, Goyder Institute for Water Research

This year’s IWD theme is Balance the Scales: a promise that every woman and girl – regardless of background or identity – should be safe, heard, and free to shape their own lives.
Yet in 2026, too many across Australia and the world are still denied that fair go. Discriminatory laws, policies, and practices persist. Gender-based violence remains widespread, and structural barriers block too many from seeking or receiving justice.
These barriers are not inevitable. They are built – and they can be dismantled.
Equality is not about advantage for some; it’s about dignity, safety, and fairness for all.
When women and girls stand equal, families are stronger, workplaces are fairer, communities thrive, and society becomes safer for everyone.
